It’s been a while since I’ve done a coffee post, but I’m getting back in the swing of things today.
In my pursuit of the greatest veteran/first responder-owned coffee, I’ve set out to try as many as I possibly can. Getting Caffeinated, is my blog series journaling just that, how I get my caffeine fix from the finest men and women on the planet.
On deck for November 2021: Call Sign Coffee Company
Call Sign Coffee is owned by Brynt and Lisa.
Brynt, an Army Infantryman, spent 25 years in the Army and is a graduate of both Airborne and Ranger Schools. He spent time in The Old Guard, escorting deceased Army service members to their final rest in the “Gardens of Stone”, as Arlington National Cemetery is often referred to. Brynt continues to serve with the Boys Scouts of America, veteran service organizations, ROTC programs, and many other local and national community initiatives.
Lisa, a military spouse, and Founder of Call Sign is an expert roaster. She’s also a mom, mountaineer, and veteran advocate. Lisa originally started her work life in design, and eventually switched gears to business operations. Leveraging her myriad of skills Lisa built an art business, and some of her work is included in the permanent collections of several museums. She continues to serve with many veteran and military service organizations and civilian boards, especially as an entrepreneur advisor.
Together, they decided that coffee would be a great platform to utilize their start-up knowledge and give back to the veteran community. They’ve trained with the best in the business, and strive to put only the most top-notch products under the Call Sign name.
The Brew:
In 2016 we began to our journey to resurrect a part of history that has deep roots in Northwest Arkansas. Using regionally sourced Apples and distilling the spirit in Northwest Arkansas was at the core of how we wanted to resurrect this part of our culture. We are confident that the Macon brothers would be proud of our apple brandy.
RG MACON & CARSON APPLE BRANDY SOAKED SPECIALTY COFFEE! We utilized an amazing specialty coffee for this “Reserve” seasonal coffee: Honduran Pacivita. While it is a medium roast, we took advantage of the medium spectrum for a full flavor finish. You will be left with the essence of Apple Brandy!
Preparation:
I prepared Ozark Reserve in a french press, approximately 40 grams of ground coffee with 3.5 cups of water. From the minute you open the bag, to the second those beans are ground, you can smell the apples from the brandy. It’s a sweet smell that has a very “fall” aroma about it. I can see the brandy being worked in the still back in 1893.
Plus, this is the OZ Stout version, so you get that heavy smoke and dark chocolate courtesy of Bentonville Brewery. Soaking in that stout barrel gives it a distinct heavy taste like a darker roast without the burnt taste that you sometimes get with darker roasts. Overall, this is a great cup. It’s probably the best barrel-aged roast I’ve had so far. Highly recommend you give it a try!
Extras:
Brynt and Lisa have been good to me, and very supportive. They even gave me my own discount code!
Use code CLARK10 at checkout for 10% off your order, unless you are buying gift cards. But why buy gift cards when you could be buying coffee?
*Disclaimer, I don’t receive kickbacks or anything from the code, just the joy of supporting a great business. So use it all you want, and definitely get yourself the OZ Reserve and their new Hot Cocoa.
